Power has been restored to about 700 customers who live along Highway 17 in the Awendaw-McClellanville area, according to SCE&G.
The power company said they restored power just before 9:45 a.m. Earlier Wednesday, as many as 1,600 people lost power. SCE&G officials said a mechanical failure on their system caused the outage.
Because of the outage, Cape Romain Environmental Education Charter School in McClellanville was closed.
Heavy rain poured throughout the area during the early-morning hours.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol also reported roadway flooding in the area of Halfway Creek Rd. and Steed Creek Rd.
