COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - SCE&G is closing two coal-powered generating plants in Walterboro, four years ahead of schedule.
The power company had originally planned to convert the two plants at Walterboro's Canadys station to use natural gas before retiring them in 2017, but their closure has been expedited to better protect the environment.
The plants are among the company's oldest and smallest coal-fired plants, ranging 45 to 57 years old.
Nearly 70 people work at the plants. SCE&G says they will help those employees find other positions.
