ROLAND, IA (KCCI/CNN) - Having a secret password that only you and your child know isn't just a game. It could save his or her life.
An unidentified 13-year-old Iowa boy was approached on Monday by a man in a truck offering him a ride, according to the Story County Sheriff's Department.
The man told the boy his mom had sent him.
But mom and son have a password for when something like this comes up.
"He asked the guy the password and he didn't know it so the kid just kind of took off after that," said Roland Mayor Roger Fritz.
The boy was not followed.
Fritz says a password is an effective way to keep kids safe.
"This password thing's a great idea to have that conversation with your kids. I've already had that conversation," he said.
Ashley Lindstrom, a local mom who also runs a daycare, has had that conversation.
"We told her you know unless someone picks you up and knows that password you don't go with them. You walk or run the other way," she said.
