Thousands of ducks float down Wando River

DANIEL ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Some 25,000 rubber ducks floated down the Wando River today, as a part of the Charity Duck Race.

In its 7th year, volunteers sell numbered ducks for 10 dollars apiece, with money benefiting five local rotary clubs.  The ducks are then collected and dropped from a container off of I-526 on Daniel Island.

"They float with the tide so we know to do it at the right time,"  Daniel Island Rotary Club President-elect Bill Stevens said.   "We have 400 feet of containment boom, so we make sure we catch all of them."

Volunteers then pull out 35 ducks, whose "owners" will then win cash prizes, including a $10,000 grand prize.

Stevens estimates that $100,000 was raised this year.
