5 inches of rain falls on Orangeburg Co. town

NORTH, S.C. (AP) - A storm that dumped about 5 inches of rain on the Orangeburg County town of North brought flooding to streets and homes.

Fire Chief Greg Gambrell says the storm popped up suddenly and drenched the town of 800 people Sunday.

No injuries were reported.

Some homes and businesses were damaged. Some trees fell and the water washed away part of a railroad track and forced the closure of some major highways.

Those at St. Mark United Methodist Church were stranded in the sanctuary for a time after the rain turned the churchyard into a pond. Water also surrounded the First Baptist Church in North.

The floodwaters washed out part of the CSX railroad track bed north of town. Part of U.S. 321 was closed most of the afternoon.
