CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A judge set bond at $25,000 Thursday for the Crisis Ministries chief financial officer accused of embezzling over $96,000.

Charleston Police Department officers arrested 55-year-old Carol Libby on Thursday morning and charged her with breach of trust with fraudulent intent.  She was taken to the Charleston County Detention Center.

The investigation began last Friday, when police responded to Crisis Ministries on 573 Meeting Street.  Executive Director Stacy Denaux told investigators that Libby had deposited at least 10 different checks, totaling $11,009.20, into her personal account.

According to Denaux, those funds were meant for several institutions that work with Crisis Ministries.

Court documents released Thursday indicate Libby actually embezzled $96,199.01 over 18 months.

Denaux told police that the Wells Fargo Loss Prevention Center had contacted her in reference to several checks that appeared to have been put into a personal account.

The prevention center told Crisis Ministries that the checks had been addressed to different businesses.

Libby was suspended from the nonprofit without pay on Monday.  Crisis Ministries does not expect any program or service to be compromised by this unfortunate event and remains committed to its critical mission to serve the homeless.
