CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's population grew more than 2% between 2010 and 2012. And new numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau show the fastest growing areas are along the state's coast.
The state's population is now 4.7 million, up about 100,000 people during that period.
South Carolina also has 3 of the nation's fastest-growing counties and 3 of its fastest-growing municipalities.
Berkeley County was the state's fastest-growing county during the period, growing 6.7%. That's the 35th fastest-growing county in America.
Mount Pleasant is the nation's 38th fastest-growing municipality. Last year, its population was almost 72,000, up almost 6% from two years earlier.
Horry and Dorchester counties are also among the 100 fastest-growing counties in the nation. Charleston and North Charleston are among the country's 100 fastest-growing municipalities.
