Sheriff: Motorcyclist caught with drugs, cash after IOP chase

ISLE OF PALMS, SC (WCSC) - Charleston County sheriff's deputies say they seized drugs and almost $3,000 in cash after a 28-year-old motorcyclist crashed during a chase on Isle of Palms on Sunday night.

According to Major Jim Brady, sheriff's office spokesman, deputies tried to pull over 28-year-old Henry Oliver Nesbit Jr. at the corner of JC Long Boulevard and Ocean Boulevard a little before 8 p.m.  Deputies said they signaled for Nesbit to stop, and he said, "I'm going to the spot," before abruptly speeding off.

Deputies said Nesbit made a left turn onto Palm Boulevard and accelerated rapidly, passing vehicles in the right-hand bicycle lane then passing other vehicles on the left at a high rate of speed.

Deputies said Nesbit reached speeds of approximately 86 miles per hour during the chase.

Nesbit then approached a curve in the road near 4th Avenue, where he lost control of the bike and struck a mailbox.  He was found lying in the roadway injured.  Deputies noted Nesbit sustained a severe cut to his right forehead.

Deputies said they found 2.3 grams of marijuana, 2.3 grams of cocaine, and $2,918.78 in cash.

Nesbit was taken to the hospital for treatment.  He remained at the hospital Monday.

He is charged with failure to stop for blue lights, failure to signal, and habitual offender.  He will also face drug charges.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
