COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Senate is returning to the Statehouse to take up 53 of Gov. Nikki Haley's budget vetoes.

Senators plan to go into session at 11 a.m. Thursday. The House took up all 81 of the governor's vetoes Wednesday from the $6.7 billion spending plan, sustaining 28 of them.

The vetoes that remain for the Senate include $3 million for an advanced Clemson University lab to study how to breed plants to be more resistant to diseases, $5 million for nursing homes in the state and a number of smaller projects like repairs to the Barnwell County Courthouse, a visitor's center in Orangeburg and lighting for parking areas around the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island.

A two-thirds vote is needed to override 1 of the governor's vetoes.
