Authorities say a 45-year-old man vacationing with his family at the Isle of Palms drowned Sunday after saving his nephew.

According to the Charleston County Coroner's Office, 45-year-old John Palmer drowned at Front Beach near 51st Avenue.  He was from Lexington, Kentucky.

Isle of Palms Fire Chief Ann Graham said Palmer was able to save his 17-year-old nephew but was pulled underwater.

A firefighter involved in the rescue was also pulled into the surf, according to Graham.  He was treated and released from the hospital.
