COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC)
Five men who were arrested earlier this year in connection to the killing of an innocent bystander now face charges of murder.
The Colleton County Sheriff's Office says Jason Wilson, Reginald Fryar, Brandon Allen Bowman, Deon Hampton and Carl Crandell Scriven were all charged Tuesday afternoon with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in reference to an April 9 shooting on West Side Lane in Colleton County near Walterboro.
The shooting took the life of an innocent bystander, Rebecca Marshelle Dewitt, who was caught in the crossfire as she returned home from the store with her children.
Investigators say Dewitt, a 34-year-old mother of three, was struck once by a bullet while she was inside a car in her driveway. Her family took her to the hospital where she later died of her injuries.
"We have dedicated many man hours and efforts in identifying the individuals responsible for this senseless crime and will be relentless in our efforts to bring them to justice" said Sheriff R.A. Strickland on Tuesday.
On April 15, Strickland announced that several arrests were made in the shooting. At the time, the suspects were charged with attempted murder. Along with the arrests, two vehicles, believed to be involved in the shooting were recovered. Investigators say one of the vehicles was found burnt.
Tuesday's press release states the sheriff's office had been continuing their investigation and kept the 14th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office aware of developments in the case. Together, both departments brought charges of murder to the five defendants suspected in the incident.
