BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Officials at the Beaufort County Animal Shelter say they believe many of the more than 70 dogs and cats they've accepted in two days have owners, but no one has claimed the animals.
The shelter took in 72 dogs and cats Monday and Tuesday, which marked the start of 1 of year's busiest weeks for animal rescue groups.
Shelter director Tallulah Trice says the animals include a black Lab from Bluffton with an electronic collar who has been at the shelter for a week.
The July 4 holiday is 1 of the busiest times at the shelter because fireworks can scare pets.
County records show the shelter typically accepts 14 animals a day.
