WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - A 19-year-old North Charleston man is behind bars for dealing drugs after he was arrested by police officers following a chase in West Ashley Monday night.
The Charleston Police Department arrested Rakym Benton on Tuesday and charged him with trafficking cocaine base and trespassing.
On Monday night, officers were patrolling the area of America and Johnson streets when they saw a man, later identified as Benton, running away and looking back several times.
Police say when officers attempted to make contact with Benton, who had a frightened look on his face, the suspect started running faster in an attempt to get away.
At one point during the chase, investigators say Benton briefly stopped at a car and bent over.
A police report states Benton was eventually caught by police on Johnson Street.
According to investigators, when officers went to the vehicle Benton was spotted stopping at, they found a cigarette box underneath the car which contained $2500 worth of cocaine base.
Authorities say a search of Benton yielded two cigarette packs which matched the brand of packs found by police that contained the narcotics.
Benton remained behind bars Wednesday at the Charleston County Detention Center after he was issued a $250,000 bond.
