BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Two people were hospitalized Wednesday evening during a three-vehicle wreck on Highway 52 in Moncks Corner.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a car was stopped on Highway 17-A and preparing to turn onto Old Whitesville Road around 5:15 p.m. Authorities say a 2004 Mercury could not stop in time, swerved to avoid hitting the stopped car and hit a GMC SUV head-on.

An emergency helicopter was called to the scene and two people from the GMC were transported to Medical University of South Carolina.

Witnesses had reported that authorities shut down the highway in the area of the Dick Smith Chevrolet dealership on 1601 Hwy 52 where the emergency helicopter landed.

According to motorists in the area, traffic in both directions on Highway 52 was stopped for nearly half an hour.
