PLANO, TX (RNN) - Country music legend Randy Travis suffered a stroke Wednesday three days after being hospitalized and underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.
Travis is listed in critical condition, and friends and family have gathered at The Baylor Heart Hospital in Plano, TX, according to his publicist.
He was admitted to another hospital Sunday with viral cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that makes it difficult to pump blood through the body. After doctors determined "a higher level of specialized care was appropriate," he was transferred to Plano on Monday and received a device to help with bloodflow and stabilization.
"Since his transfer, his condition has stabilized and he has shown signs of improvement," Dr. Michael Mack said earlier Wednesday.
Still, doctors acknolwedged he was in congestive heart failure.
Doctors said Travis was in "excellent health" until three weeks ago when he developed the viral upper respiratory illness.
Travis is one of country music's most iconic stars. He's sold more than 20 million albums throughout his three-decade career.
Some of Travis' most popular hits include Forever and Ever, Amen and Three Wooden Crosses.
