Officers: 17-year-old caught with stolen gun in Walterboro

WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Walterboro Public Safety officers say a 17-year-old male was arrested early Thursday morning after a stolen handgun was found in a car occupied by the suspect.

Denezel Levar Kelly of Walterboro was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol and possession of stolen property.

According to a report, Kelly, along with two others, were spotted hanging out by a car around 12:30 a.m. in the Druid Hills II apartment complex.

When an officer approached the group, the officer's K-9 alerted on the vehicle. A search of the vehicle found a black .22 caliber handgun on the drivers seat, the report states.

Officers say Kelly admitted the gun was his. The gun was found to be stolen from Summerville.

Kelly was arrested and transported to the Colleton County Detention Center.

Druid Hills II has been marked by two shootings in the past month.

According to a report, Walterboro Public Safety was called to the apartment complex on July 1 around 1 a.m. after a 20-year-old was shot in his right forearm.

Officers again responded to the complex on June 17 to reports of a shooting. A report states that an apartment's window, shutter and overhang were found to be shot at. A gun was also found in an apartment stairwell.
