CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The mercury is rising and experts say that vehicle theft is too. More vehicles are stolen during the summer than in any other season.

The Highway Loss Data Institute released its annual list of most stolen vehicles, based on the number of insurance claims from the three previous model years.

Luxury SUVs and pickups dominate the list, which includes; Ford F-250 Crew4 WDD, Chevy Silverado 1500, Chevy Avalanche 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 Crew, Ford F-350 Crew 4 WD, Cadillac Escalade 4 WD, Chevy Suburban 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 Extended Cab, GMC Yukon and the Chevy Tahoe.

However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a very different list. Their list is based on the FBI's Uniform Crime Report which shows nearly 74% of all vehicles reported stolen were passenger cars;

Dodge Charger, Pontiac G6, Chevy Impala, Chrysler 300, Infiniti FX 35, Mitsubishi Galant, Chrysler Sebring, Lexus SC, Dodge Avenger and Kia Rio.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau has its own list of most stolen vehicles which include;

1994 Honda Accord, 1998 Honda Civic, 2006 full size Ford Pickup, 1991 Toyota Camry, 2000 Dodge Caravan, 1994 Acura Integra, 1999 full size Chevy Pickup, 2004 full size Dodge Pickup, 2002 Ford Explorer and 1994 Nissan Sentra.

Models from t1990's90s are big targets because they're easier to steal and thieves can sell their parts, which end up being worth more than the car itself.

The NICB list is based on National Theft Records and does not include a vehicle's insured status.The mercury is rising and experts say that vehicle theft is too.
