CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Firefighters are investigating the cause of a blaze at a Spring Street apartment late Wednesday.
Charleston Battalion Chief Mike Julazadeh said fire crews responded to the fire at 111 Spring Street a little before 10:45 p.m. after residents returned home to find their apartment full of smoke.
Firefighters arrived on scene of the four-unit apartment building and quickly determined the fire had extinguished on its own, Julazadeh said. The fire self-extinguished because windows and doors to the unit remained intact and shut, cutting off oxygen supply to the blaze.
Julazadeh said the first-floor of the apartment sustained substantial fire and smoke damage and the second floor sustained smoke and heat damage.
A smoke alarm in the neighboring apartment sounded approximately two hours before the 911 call but no smoke was visible and the incident went unreported. No working smoke alarms were identified within the fire damaged apartment.
No one was injured.
