ISLE OF PALMS, SC (WCSC) -

A teen swimmer reported missing Tuesday was found unconscious and wet lying next to a dune several hours later, according to Isle of Palms Fire and Rescue.

IOP Fire and Rescue Chief Ann Graham said crews began searching for a missing 18-year-old swimmer around 7 p.m. after his friends told firefighters they had lost sight of him.

Crews were joined by the Coast Guard, North Charleston police, and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office as they searched both land and sea for about three hours.  Graham said some conflicting reports from beach-goers caused some confusion as to whether the swimmer had made it back to shore or not.

Around 10 p.m., Graham said crews found the teen unconscious and wet in the nadir of a set of dunes near 24th Avenue.  Graham said firefighters were able to awaken the teen, but he was very disoriented and couldn't explain how he got there.

The teen was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
