Wreath laying at memorial site for Battery Wagner

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Six days of events commemorating the 150th anniversary of the attack by the black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry conclude in Charleston with the laying of a wreath at the site of a future memorial.

The ceremony Sunday evening on Charleston's historic Battery features re-enactors representing both North and South. It's being held at the site of a future memorial to the dead who fell at Battery Wagner in 1863.

The event starts at 6 p.m. at White Point Garden at the Battery near Murray Blvd. and East Battery in Downtown Charleston. Admission to the event is free.

The 54th Massachusetts led the charge against the Confederate Battery on Morris Island in a battle chronicled in the film "Glory." Their performance helped dispel the Civil War myth, held by many in both the North and South, that black troops could not fight.

Thursday was the 150th anniversary of the battle.
