Man accused of using brick to strike concerned citizen in the head

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A 43-year-old man is behind bars after police say he struck a man using a brick in downtown.

The Charleston Police Department charged Malcolm Fletcher with second-degree assault and battery by mob.

On Wednesday at 3:30 a.m., police responded to Meeting Street in reference to an assault.

The 49-year-old victim told officers he was walking to work on King Street near Columbus Street when he noticed Fletcher, who was wearing an orange reflective vest and hard hat, acting suspiciously beside several vehicles.

A police report states when the victim confronted Fletcher regarding his activity, the suspect turned towards the victim and struck the victim on his ear with a brick.

Officers observed injuries to the victim's forehead and a 2-inch cut behind the victim's left ear.

According to investigators, when officers spotted Fletcher in the area, the suspect began running between two buildings on Meeting and Lee streets.

Authorities say Fletcher, who was still wearing a hard hat, was located attempting to hide behind a dumpster.

An incident report states officers found an orange traffic vest and a brick in Fletcher's bag.
