Former Georgetown Co. deputy arrested after SWAT standoff in New Mexico

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A former Georgetown County Sheriff's Office deputy is in police custody in New Mexico after a SWAT team standoff at his Santa Fe home.

Santa Fe County Sheriff's officials say 44-year-old George Smith was taken to a hospital to be evaluated after the standoff ended about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
They say Smith will be jailed on suspicion of resisting arrest and battery on a household member.
Authorities say Smith reported Wednesday morning to the Santa Fe County Jail to receive an electric monitoring device for a robbery charge.
When his wife walked across the street to report a battery charge against him, Smith reportedly fled and barricaded himself inside his home.
Authorities say Smith was previously charged with holding up two pharmacies in the Santa Fe area in December.

Smith was a sheriff's deputy in Georgetown County for 15 years before quitting in 2009.
