Saving money the smart way for the holiday season

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Last year, Americans spent on average close to $900 on gifts for the holiday season, according to PNC financial expert Ben Fordham.

Fordham says if you start putting away money now, you can easily save up the money you need by the time Santa arrives.

"We find that a lot of customers make plans at the last minute and they get left with a bill they can't afford," Fordham said.

Fordham says it's never too early to start saving for an expense you know is coming. He says planning ahead prepares you for the holidays both financially as well as mentally.

It's also important to know what you can afford and who you are buying for.

"When you put those two elements together that helps you figure out what you will be spending in reality come the holiday season," Fordham said.

He says the longer you have been thinking and working toward a budget, the more likely you are to stick to it.
