Conservative group says CofC orientation book "close to pornography"

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The leader of a conservative group in South Carolina is criticizing the College of Charleston's choice of a book for incoming freshmen to read for orientation.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the head of the Palmetto Family Council in Columbia thinks the Alison Bechdel book, "Fun Home," is inappropriate for freshmen students. Oran Smith says he found the book close to pornography.

Bechdel's book describes her childhood with a closeted gay father and her own coming out as a lesbian.

Smith says the comments he has received from the council's supporters are negative.

Bechdel says she doesn't consider her book pornographic.

Provost George Hynd says the school is not considering changing the book selection.
