CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Ashley River Bridge has been repaired and traffic is getting back to normal into downtown Charleston on Friday afternoon.
The bridge malfunctioned around 2:30 p.m. and would not close completely, causing traffic to back up into West Ashley. Police began rerouting traffic near the Holiday Inn for a time, but repairs were completed minutes later.
By 3:20 p.m., traffic was flowing smoothly again on the bridge.
James Law, spokesman for South Carolina Department of Transportation, said the malfunction was caused by debris in the switching mechanism that operates the traffic arms that raise and lower.
