JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Deputies say they arrested a Summerville man stocked with marijuana and ecstasy after he led them on a car chase and a foot chase on James Island on Monday.
According to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, a K-9 deputy attempted a traffic stop on a 2013 Ford Fusion on Dill Bluff Road around 7:30 p.m. after seeing the speeding car cross over to the opposing lane of traffic.
Brady said the driver, 31-year-old Joseph Duvall Smith, of Summerville, did not stop but continued onto Williams Road at speeds exceeding 50 miles per hour. Deputies say the chase continued to the end of that road, when Smith's car came to a stop in a ditch.
Deputies said they again told Smith to stop, but he ran from the vehicle, so they unleashed Niko, a K-9, to bring Smith to a halt. However, Brady said Smith pushed Niko off, avoiding apprehension.
Finally, deputies said they had to use a taser on Smith, who got up and started to run again after he was initially shocked. Niko was released again, and this time, Smith was apprehended, according to Brady.
Deputies said they proceeded to find about eight pounds of marijuana, 65 ecstasy pills, and $1,159 in cash inside Smith's car.
Smith was taken to Medical University of South Carolina for treatment of his wounds sustained in the chase. He was then booked at the Charleston County Detention Center on charges of failure to stop for blue lights, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession with intent to distribute ecstasy, and resisting arrest.
A judge issued a $100,000 bond on Smith's charges during a hearing Tuesday evening.
