Ashley Ridge PE teacher charged for sending photo of privates to teen

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A Physical Education teacher and coach at Ashley Ridge High School has been accused of sending a nude photo to a teen student.

According to the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, 27-year-old Andrew Jonathan Gerhardt was arrested and charged with disseminating obscene material to a person under the age of 18.

Court documents state Gerhardt, a JV women's basketball coach, sent a photo of his privates to a 16-year-old girl on July 14.

The investigation began Monday, when deputies responded to the school in regards to the photo. According to an incident report, the victim's parents were disciplining their daughter by taking her phone when they found the photo.

Deputies said Gerhardt's face and genitalia were both in plain view in the photo.

Gerhardt was arrested Tuesday and released from the Dorchester County Detention Center after posting a $20,000 bond.

Dorchester District 2 has recommended Gerhardt, an annual contract teacher, be dismissed from the school, according to district spokesperson Pat Raynor.  The school and district have cooperated fully with the sheriff's department in the investigation of the reported incident.

Gerhardt has been with the school district for one year, Raynor said.  According to the school's website, he is a graduate of Clemson University with a degree in Sport Management and attended The Citadel for his Master's degree in Physical Education.
