CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Investigators say a 36-year-old man is behind bars after severely beating a 10-year-old girl and leaving her, two other children and a woman on the side of the road in Hollywood.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office charged Michael J. Butler with second-degree assault and battery by mob and neglect of a child. Butler's bond was set at $100,000.
On Friday night, a deputy in the area of Davidson Road and Highway 17 spotted a 31-year-old woman flagging him down. The woman said a 10-year-old girl had been assaulted by Butler.
According to the woman, she and three children were in a vehicle with Butler, who she said had been drinking and using drugs.
Authorities say when the children in the back of the vehicle began to argue, Butler got out of the front seat while the vehicle was in motion, moved to the rear and started hitting a 10-year-old girl in the face.
Investigators say when the vehicle came to a stop, Butler got out of the vehicle and pushed the woman and the three children out of the vehicle, then drove away leaving them on the side of the road.
The 10-year-old victim told police that Butler hit her in the face and arms multiple times before pushing her out of the vehicle.
Police say they observed the victim's face was swollen, and blood was coming from her nose.
Medical staff at the hospital said the girl had a possible broken nose and fractured jaw.
