MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A new, 148-home development off Highway 17 North in Mt. Pleasant is inching closer to reality Monday night.
The Mount Pleasant Planning Committee approved the proposed 80-acre plan for Stratton Place, which would be constructed adjacent to Charleston National.
The development is slated for three phases, and if it's passed by town council, development may begin by the first half of next year.
Town council will hold a first reading on the issue next week.
The proposal has prompted outcries from Mt. Pleasant residents concerned about impacts the new neighborhood could bring. During a meeting in late July, 23 people spoke against the project.
One person said it was a "bad deal for Charleston National," while others were concerned about traffic, the environmental impact and the overcrowding of schools in the area.
"We've done our homework," said Larry Long, the proposed developer of the project. "We will do what we can to make this project something you'll be proud of."
