CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Six Democrats crowd Tuesday's primary ballot as the party selects a nominee to fill the unexpired term of longtime state Sen. Robert Ford of Charleston.

Ford resigned in May and cited health issues. At the time, he was the focus of a Senate Ethics Committee probe.

Senate District 42 includes the northern end of the Charleston peninsula and reaches north into North Charleston and Dorchester County. About 63% of voters are black or other minorities.

Ford has endorsed Maurice Washington, the president of a financial services company.

Businesswoman Margaret Rush and two attorneys, Marlon Kimpson and Emmanuel Ferguson, also are in the race. The other candidates are Herbert S. Fielding, whose father once held the Senate seat, and Bob Thompson, who once served in the Georgia House of Representatives.
