CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police say a group of citizens helped take down a man who was spotted snatching a purse from a woman in West Ashley.

Dustin Andrew Carroll, 20, was arrested Tuesday and charged with second-degree burglary and purse snatching. The Columbia resident is also wanted by the Columbia Police Department for armed robbery.

Officers say Carroll approached a woman who was walking out of Dollar Tree on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard around 6 p.m. and asked her for money.

When the woman pulled $5 our of her purse, police say the suspect grabbed the money and the victim's purse and ran.

A report states several people who saw the purse snatching chased Carroll down, caught him, and held him until police arrived.

Carroll, who was bloody at the time of the burglary, told officers his brother stabbed him in the hand earlier that morning in Columbia.

According to police, Carroll also matched the description of the suspect involved in the burglary of an Albermarle Road home earlier that day.

Officers say a man noticed a "strange car" parked at his neighbor's house around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday. When approached, a woman inside the vehicle said she was interested in buying his neighbor's sailboat and asked if she could have the neighbor's number.

While on the way back to his house to get his neighbor's number, police say he saw a man who later matched Carroll's description walk out of his neighbor's house carrying a gun case. Several pieces of jewelry were reported stolen from the house.

Carroll is being held at the Charleston County Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing.
