Deputies arrest man for alleged ambush, assault of Pawleys Island cyclist

PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

One of three suspects who allegedly jumped out of the woods and assaulted and robbed a bicyclist in Pawleys Island last month has been taken into custody.

The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office says they arrested Jamie Kareem Simmons last Friday and charged him with armed robbery, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and kidnapping.

Investigators say Simmons and two other unidentified suspects lied in waiting in a wooded area along Waverly Road on July 22 until a bicyclist rode by.  According to the cyclist, he was riding his bike about 2:30 p.m. when the suspects hopped out of the woods and told him they wanted the bike.

The victim said he told them they could have it, but one suspect pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and struck him in the face.  The suspects then fled the scene with the bicycle.

Simmons was taken to the Georgetown County Detention Center and was later issued an $85,000 bond for his alleged role in the ambush.

The investigation is ongoing.
