Charges dropped in Walterboro tax workshop breach of trust case

WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Charges against a Walterboro man accused of funneling over $45,000 in funds into his own pockets while working at a tax preparation workshop have been dropped.

In an affidavit filed on June 11, 14th Judicial Circuit Assistant Solicitor Francine Norz asked for the indictment against 45-year-old Lennie Johnson to be "nolle prossed,' meaning the prosecution no longer wished to pursue the charge.

Johnson was originally charged with breach of trust with fraudulent intent over $10,000 in August 2013.

The recent filing states the prosecution had "insufficient evidence to persuade a jury beyond a reasonable doubt."

According to court records, Johnson allegedly stole roughly $45,430 while working at the Income Tax Workshop from January 1, 2012 to April 30, 2012. Investigators argued Johnson prepared tax returns for customers, but did not report the preparations for some customers to the business owners.
