On a day where almost all of the incoming freshmen started their lives as Cadets, better known as Matriculation Day in Citadel terms, two freshman Bulldog football players had their own welcoming party at the team's first game style scrimmage at Maybank Triplets Practice Facility at Willson Field on Saturday.
B-back Tyler Renew and wide receiver Jorian Jordan each posted impressive numbers on Saturday as Renew ran the ball eight times for 105 yards, while Jordan hauled in a touchdown pass from Aaron Miller on a three-yard fade.
Senior quarterback, and two-year captain, Ben Dupree also looked sharp, running the ball 15 times for 106 yards and a touchdown, while Miller completed 7 of 11 passes for 99 yards and score.
On the defensive side of the ball, redshirt freshman cornerback Cody Richardson tallied an interception, while fellow defensive backs Brandon McCladdie and Dondray Copeland also put six points apiece on the board with a scoop and score and pick six, respectively.
The Bulldogs' first scrimmage, which was moved from Johnson Hagood Stadium to the practice facility due to rain, showed the fans some exciting new looks on offense, using packages from the shotgun and I-formations to complement its systematic triple option look.
The Citadel is slated to scrimmage one more time on Wednesday in preparation for its 2013 opener on Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. at home against crosstown foe Charleston Southern.
