MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County Coroner's Office has identified a woman who authorities say died minutes after being struck by a car on Highway 17 late Saturday.
Authorities say 59-year-old Patricia West from Columbia died of blunt force trauma.
Mt. Pleasant police say the victim was crossing Highway 17 Southbound near Park West Boulevard around 10:15 p.m. when she was struck by a car. The motorist told police he was traveling in the middle lane of the road and could not see the woman until he struck her on the left side of his vehicle.
Another motorist who was driving north at the time of the wreck said she saw the woman cross the road, but did not use the crosswalk. Other witnesses around the scene at the time of the wreck told police they could not see the woman cross the road.
Witnesses told police the collision caused the woman to go airborne before coming to a rest.
The victim was taken to Roper St. Francis for treatment but was pronounced dead shortly before 11 p.m.
Police shut down the southbound lanes of Highway 17 in the area for about four hours while investigating the scene.
No charges have been filed.
