DANIEL ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - From the Department of "Really?" comes a story out of Daniel Island, South Carolina, where the owner of a restaurant serving meals named after South Carolina football stars received notice that he was in violation of NCAA rules.
Brian Mahoney has owned his sports bar, the Daniel Island Grille, for 5 years and says he recently got a cease and desist order from the University of South Carolina and Clemson University for using the names of Jadeveon Clowney, Tajh Boyd, and Sammy Watkins.
Mahoney also says he's not concerned with NCAA rules as long as he is not breaking the law.
According to the NCAA bylaws, astudent-athlete could lose their eligibility if their likeness is used topromote a commercial product even if they were not aware their likeness wasbeing used.
In the mean time, Mahoney says he'll comply with the order and pay the thousands of dollars it will cost him to reprint his menus and retrain his staff.
And for the record, a Jadeveon Clowney was a turkey avocado wrap, Sammy Watkins was a Reuben sandwich, and Tajh Boyd was a chicken quesadilla.
