Gov. Haley tours armored vehicle production company in Ladson

LADSON, SC (WCSC) -

Gov. Nikki Haley stopped by the Lowcountry Tuesday to look at bullet proof vehicles.

She toured Streit USA Armoring, a company based in Ladson that makes armored cars for our government and for military officials in the U.S. and overseas.

The governor began her trip with a quick meeting discussing the company's growth. It has recently expanded from a 35,000 square foot facility to 75,000.

The company also hired about 20 new workers. The company also has recently won a new contract with the U.S. military to build 22 new Sport Utility Vehicles. There is a possibility to build an additional 18.

Haley said she is excited to visit the facility that provides such a crucial element of security for our troops.

"We have a strong defense system here in South Carolina, which is good for this company," said Haley. "But, we have a lot of military personnel that are oversees and to know that they are a part of this, it's comforting. And as a wife it's comforting."

Streit has seven production lines in the U.S. and makes about 70 armored vehicles per month.

They cost between $75,000 and $600,000.
