BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A Berkeley County child who was bitten by a fox is undergoing treatment for rabies after the animal tested positive for the disease, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).
Officials say the child, who was bitten in Pineville, South Carolina, is currently receiving post-exposure treatments. The fox was the first animal in Berkeley County to test positive this year.
DHEC recommends people avoid wild animals, whether they are acting tame or not.
"Wild animals carry the disease most often, but domestic pets can contract rabies as well," says DHEC's Sue Ferguson.
In 2012, 137 confirmed cases of animal rabies were reported, according to DHEC.
