KINGSTREE, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the Kingstree Police Department say they are searching for a person who was spotted carrying a gun near a school.
Chief Eric Williams says Anderson Primary School on 500 Lexington Avenue was placed on lockdown for about an hour after witnesses reported a person carrying a "long gun" near the school.
Williamsburg County School Superintendent Yvonne Jefferson-Barnes said around 11:10 a.m., three young men were seen at the corner of Lexington and Anderson streets. Jefferson-Barnes said a district staffer saw one of the men with what appeared to be a long gun, and called the principal.
The school was then placed on lockdown.
Williams says his department as well as the Williamsburg County Sheriff's Office is searching the area for the suspect.
According to Williams, the lockdown at the school was lifted at 1 p.m.
