The Red Cross is helping a Summerville family after a tree struck by lightning fell on a home Tuesday night.

Keith Flowers says he was in his living room at his Jedburg Road home watching television on his day off from work when it all started.

"I heard some rumbling and caught a flash of lightning on the corner of my eye and was waiting for the rumble," Flowers said.

But what he heard next wasn't a rumble, it was in his words an "explosion" as a tree fell on his home leaving a giant crater through the roof.

According to Flowers, the tree damaged various areas of his home, and sank the foundation of the house by 8 to 10 inches.

Flowers says the home, which is over a hundred years old, is a total loss and there were no injuries. Aside from Flowers, there were two cats and a dog in the home. Flowers says his pets are fine.
