South Carolina Highway Patrol says a utility pole fell over at Dorchester and Bacons Bridge roads Thursday morning, causing power lines to fall on top of a pickup.
Senior Trooper Bridget Wyant said the incident happened a little before 8 a.m., when contractors were digging around the pole. Wyant said because the ground was saturated with water, the pole fell over, dropping wires onto the pickup.
No injuries were reported and power was restored a short time later.
Dorchester County emergency dispatchers said the downed pole caused power outages in the area. Traffic lights at Highway 78 and West 5th North Street and Iris Street were down, as were the lights at Dorchester Road and Middleton Boulevard.
The roadway was reopened a little before 8:30 a.m. but SCE&G crews remained on scene to repair the wires.
Company spokeswoman Kim Asbill said about 3,000 customers were affected by the outage.
