(CNN) - More families are putting money away for college, but as tuition rises, most parents are still falling painfully short of their savings goal.

A new Fidelity survey finds a record 69 percent of families have started saving for college.

Most have about $5,000 put aside, but that's only about a third of what most want to save.

As a result, more than half the families surveyed worry their kids will have to compromise on quality when choosing a college.
