CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A woman who jumped off a dock in the Wagener Terrace neighborhood on the Charleston peninsula Sunday was rescued after the strong current carried her out into the Ashley River.
Charleston Police Department Public Information Officer Charles Francis said rescue teams responded to the dock at 31 Devereaux Street around 3 p.m. after receiving reports of a woman jumping off a dock and failing to resurface.
The woman and a friend were jumping in the water to cool off before they were swept away by the current, said Charleston Fire Battalion Chief Mike Julazadeh. Julazadeh said one woman made it out and called for help.
The other woman was found in the marsh a short time later.
The Charleston Coast Guard, the Charleston Fire Department,and the Charleston County Rescue Squad assisted police with the search.
