CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Several firefighting recruits suffered heat-related illnesses this past week during training, according to Charleston Fire Battalion Chief Mike Julazadeh.
Three recruits were reviewed by a medical facility and were then cleared for duty. One of the recruits spent one night in the hospital for observation before being released.
That recruit was previously ill and dehydrated and failed to inform administrators, Julazadeh said.
Firefighting recruits are provided water and sports drinks during training. Julazadeh says the department monitors temperatures and weather conditions to assist in their training plans.
