BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Berkeley County School District (BCSD) announced Wednesday enrollment has increased by over 800 students for the second straight year.

According to a release, the Kindergarten through twelfth grade student population this year increased by 838 students, bumping the total student enrollment to 30,959.

That number continues to balloon when you add the addition of three and four-year-old students.

Officials say 842 four-year-old students in the South Carolina Child Development Education Pilot Program (CDEPP) and 92 three and four-year-old students in a preschool program for developmentally handicapped children bring the grand total to 31,893 students at Berkeley County schools.

These numbers to not include federally funded Head Start program enrollment, which consists of over 500 kids.

"Growth in our schools is consistent with the county's growth along the I-26 corridor," said BCSD superintendent, Dr. Rodney Thomspon. "We are also seeing increased enrollment in some of our traditionally smaller communities such as Cainhoy and Moncks Corner.

A referendum to build five new schools and renovate 29 others was recently passed by Berkeley County residents by a margin of 59.7% to 40.3%.
