SPA: Longshoremen walk off the job at Wando, N. Charleston ports

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Several longshoremen at the Wando and North Charleston ports walked off the job Thursday morning, according to officials with the State Ports Authority.

SPA spokesman Allison Skipper said members of the ILA Local 771 Clerks and Checkers union left during vessel operations around 9:40 a.m.

President of the ILA Local 1422 Ken Riley said it all started when clerical workers were fired from their employers. According to Riley, in a showing of solidarity, the longshoremen walked off the job.

Riley said contractually the longshoremen can't take orders from substitute clerical workers. Currently, longshoremen are not loading or unloading container ships.

SPA officials reported Thursday morning that the incident had no impact on inbound or outbound truck gates at any of the SPA's terminals.

At the time of the incident, SPA officials say there was one ship at the Wando dock and two ships at the North Charleston terminal.
