COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina prison inmate is about to become a published author.
The University of South Carolina Law Review is publishing an article later this year by Demetrio Sears.
The 31-year-old Columbia man has served 11 years of an 18-year sentence for armed robbery. His 119-page article is a review of the state's post-conviction relief process, which allows inmates can challenge their sentences for a variety of reasons, including incompetent legal counsel.
Sears describes a prison system that forces inmates to rely on out-of-date law libraries and the advice of other prisoners. He says he wants judges and lawyers to understand what prisoners go through.
The state Supreme Court dismissed Sears' PCR case in 2006.
