SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A Summerville military veteran gets the keys to a mortgage-free home Tuesday. It's all part of Operation Homefront, a non-profit organization that provides free homes and other assistance to military veterans.
The organization says it has given away more than 180 free homes to date.
To qualify for the mortgage free homes, you have be a veteran, fill out an application and submit a letter about why you think you should get it.
When Charles Kennedy applied, he says he never thought he would actually win the house.
"I didn't even think we would end up getting it," said Kennedy. "I didn't think our luck would be that great, but here we are now. I guess our luck is good and we have been blessed to be here."
The whole process to get the house only took about six weeks. Along with getting the keys Tuesday, officials from Operation Homefront also dropped off a house warming gift. The Kennedy family still has a lot of work to do. They say they plan to make their new home even better.
The house was donated by Wells Fargo, but the Kennedy family still had to pay taxes on their mortgage-free home.
