CofC Volleyball Sweeps Charleston Southern At Home

College of Charleston (4-0) recorded its third consecutive sweep with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-12) win over Charleston Southern (0-4) to open the Cougars' home season on Tuesday night at TD Arena.
A crowd of 523 fans came out to watch as CofC ran its record to a perfect 4-0 for the first time since 2005. Charleston hit .360 as a team and held the Buccaneers to just a .054 attack percentage and only 23 kills. CofC recorded eight blocks and held a 27-18 advantage in total digs. The win marked the first time that Charleston hit over .300 as a team this season.
Darcy Dorton led the way with 10 kills and a blistering .467 attacking mark, while also making three blocks. Melissa Morello and Sloane White each recorded seven kills in the balanced attack. Andi Zbojniewicz reached double-digit digs again with 10, and Kallie McKown finished with 22 assists.
Everyone on CofC's bench made it into the match with some resounding results for many of the fresh faces in the maroon and gold. Freshman Maddie Hills recorded four blocks and two kills and classmate Lexi Rhein had eight assists. Catey Warren finished with three kills and Kari Fidelholtz made a service ace.
"I thought we finished the match strong after starting kind of slow," head coach Jason Kepner said. "We let way too many balls touch the floor in the first set and that showed by how close it was. But we raised our intensity level and finished the match strong. I was happy that we could get some playing time for everyone on the roster to get early-season match experience."
Charleston Southern's Meredith Parrott led the way for the Bucs with seven kills and Erin Lavenice added six kills.
CSU kept the first set close before the Cougars opened a 15-9 lead on the serve of Cara Howley. Charleston seemed in control with a 21-16 lead, but two service errors and a bad set gave CSU momentum and cut the margin to 22-19. A kill from White ended the set for CofC, 25-22. The Cougars made seven hitting errors and four service errors in the first set which allowed the Bucs to stay around.
The second and third sets looked far more familiar for Cougar fans as Charleston hit .406 and .478 in the two sets, respectively. Three straight kills from Kerstin Koehler gave CofC an 18-9 lead in the second set, and Charleston cruised to a 25-18 win after a Dorton kill. The final set was even more efficient with Charleston spreading the attack around only making three errors. CSU only managed eight points by the time CofC had already reached 20, and the match-ender, White, put it away with a kill at 25-12.
College of Charleston remains home this weekend with the Hampton Inn CofC Invitational featuring Coastal Carolina, S.C. State and Indiana. Charleston's first match will be on Friday night at 7 p.m. against the Chanticleers.
