NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Coast Guard personnel will now be trained in South Carolina in how to pursue vessels that may be violating the law with such activities as running drugs or human trafficking.
The vessel pursuit training program begins in North Charleston on Monday. The program was previously based at Camp Lejeune, N.C. The program is now part of the Maritime Law Enforcement Academy based at the federal complex at the old Charleston Naval Base.
Coast Guard officials are meeting with the media Friday to discuss the new program and what it will mean to Coast Guard training in South Carolina.
